Then
- Early 1700s
George Pawley sells lots to rice planters escaping malarial summers inland, beginning one of the oldest resorts on the East Coast.
- 1822
In the most common telling of the Gray Man legend, a ghost warns a family before a hurricane sweeps the island, sparing only their house.
- 1989
Hurricane Hugo sweeps away some of the old cottages.
Now
Pawleys bans commercial building apart from a few grandfathered inns, and its historic district of old cottages is on the National Register. Fishing, crabbing, shrimping and birding fill the summer.
The stations here cover the Waccamaw Neck, from Murrells Inlet and Garden City down through the creeks behind Pawleys and up the Waccamaw and Black rivers.
