Then

  1. Before 1800s

The Kumeyaay call the place mat kulaaxuuy, "land of holes," probably for the sea caves in the bluffs.

  2. 1896

Ellen Browning Scripps settles here and goes on to fund much of the town.

  3. 1903

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is founded. It moves to La Jolla in 1905 and opens its first lab buildings in 1907.

  4. 1964

The first undergraduates enroll at UC San Diego, which grew out of Scripps.

Now

Sea lions and harbor seals haul out at La Jolla Cove, the community's most popular spot. The tide station here sits on the Scripps Institution wharf.
