Engelhard sits at the head of Far Creek, a small tidal inlet of Pamlico Sound, 46 miles from Manteo on U.S. 264. Wynne's Folly and the Inkwell are on the National Register.
Lake Mattamuskeet, the largest natural lake in the state, lies entirely within the 50,000-acre refuge, home to black bears, river otters and red wolves.
